Southern Province is the third largest Province in Zambia, covering an area of 85,283 square kilometers.  The Province consist of Fifteen (15) Districts, namely; Chikankata, Choma,Chirundu, Gwembe, Ithezi Tehzi, Kalomo, Kazungula, Mazabuka, Monze, Namwala, Livingstone, Pemba, Siavonga, Sinazongwe and Zimba.

A home to Zambia’s premier tourist attraction, Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), shared with Zimbabwe. The centre of the province, the Southern Plateau, has the largest area of commercial farmland of any Zambian province and produces most of the maize crop.

PROVINCIAL ADMINISTRATION

In line with the Republican Constitution ( Amendment) No.02 of 2016 Article 150, establishes in each Province an Administrative Secretariat to be headed by the Provincial Minister, Permanent Secretary and other staff as prescribed.

OFFICE OF THE PROVINCIAL MINISTER

The office spearheads political, economic and social mobilization for development in the province as a whole. The office of the Provincial Minister ensures the following:

  • That government policies are understood and implemented in the Province;
  • Mobilization of development resources of the Province;
  • Carrying out regular inspection tours of development activities in the Province; and
  • Maintenance of law and order throughout the Province.

MANDATE

According to the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act, No 2 of 2016, the mandate of the Provincial Administration is to be the Provincial Secretariat which has an overall responsibility of the Province and performs other responsibility as prescribed.

Local Authorities

The district is serviced by two major trunk roads namely; Lusaka-Chirundu and Lusaka-Livingstone roads. The district has one Constituency, Chikankata, and composed of 14 Wards. The district has two (2) chiefdoms, namely; Naluama under Chief Naluama and Mwenda under Chieftainess Mwenda. Readmore

Chirundu is a town on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Province and was created in 2012 as part of Government’s decentralisation agenda and is approximately 140 Kilometers from the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka. The District has a total surface a rea of 1409 Square Kilometers and has a population size of over 78 thousand people. ReadMore

Choma District lies within longitudes and East of Greenwich, and latitudes and South of the equator on the plateau of Southern Province. It shares borders with six (6) of the thirteen (13) districts in the province, namely, Namwala in the North, Monze to the North Eastern Side, Pemba on the Eastern side, Sinazongwe in the South, Zimba in the South Western Side and Kalomo on the West. Gwembe District is a tongue-shaped stripe of land in the Southern Province of Zambia. It is in the valley of the Zambezi Escarpment, sharing boundaries with Chikankata, Siavonga, Monze, Pemba, Sinazongwe and Zimbabwe on the Lake Kariba. It is located at 160º 38” South latitude and 270º 46” East Longitude, it covers the total surface area of 3,879 km2 and from Lusaka it is approximately 260 km to Lusaka (via Monze) and 265 km (via the bottom road). Itezhi-Tezhi is one of the fifteen districts in Southern Province of Zambia. It is situated 26º south and 15 º east of Lusaka. It is located in the south-western part of the Province and lies at approximately 175km north of Mumbwa and 62Km West of Namwala District across the Kafue River on the North Bank. Kalomo district is  the first administrative capital for north-western Rhodesia from 1902-1907. It is located in Southern Province and lies within Latitude 160 and 170 south and Longitude 260 and 270 North and along the Lusaka –Livingstone Road (T1) and is approximately 120 km north of Livingstone town and approximately 400 km south of Lusaka. Kazungula Town Council is a local Authority established under the Local Government Act Chapter 281 of the laws of Zambia. the formal mandates of the local Authority are derived from the Local Government Act Chapter 281 of the laws of Zambia.

Kazungula is one of the thirteen districts in the southern province of Zambia. It covers an area of 16,835 km² and is the largest district in the province. ReadMore

Livingstone City is the tourist capital of Zambia, housing one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the mighty Victoria Falls. It has 20 wards and one constituency. Its beginnings are traced back to the explorers and traders who crossed the Zambezi River in search of adventure to the North. Livingstone was named after the famous Scottish explorer and missionary Dr. David Livingstone, who according to history was the first European to see the Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-tunya) in 1855. Mazabuka Municipal Council also places a strong emphasis on community development and social welfare. It strives to improve the quality of life for all residents by providing access to education, healthcare, and social services. The council also promotes community participation and engagement through various initiatives and programs. ReadMore

Monze Town Council is one of the 15 Local Authorities in Southern Province, situated just 190 kilometers from the capital city, Lusaka with the Population of 268,432 as at 2022 census report.
Being a District with a strong agricultural foundation, we take pride in being the number one in terms of cattle population in the country. This presents an excellent opportunity for investment in beef production, milk, and other related industries.
Furthermore, Monze is home to the renowned Lochinvar Game Management Area, a natural wonder that offers fantastic wildlife experiences especially for Bird Watchers as we host the largest bird migration in the Continent. ReadMore

Namwala District is situated in the Southern Province of Zambia. It is a rural District and shares its boundaries with Monze (South-East), Choma (South), Kalomo (South) and Itezhi-tezhi District (North-West) It is located 170 km North West of Choma District and 158km from Monze. About a quarter of its traditional land is covered by the plain that stretches from a point beyond Kafue Road Bridge in Kafue District to Itezhi-Itezhi dam. It covers an estimated total area of about 10,000 square Kilometres and lies between latitudes 15 and 17 degrees south of the equator and longitude 25 and 27 degrees East. ReadMore

The district’s total population is 67,187 (CSO, 2010) and it has a population density of 12 persons per km2 with most of the population located in the rural parts of the district. The district has two (2) chiefdoms: Moyo and Hamaundu. Moyo chiefdom has 104 villages, and Hamaundu chiefdom with 109 villages (Village Registers, 2021). The chiefs are assisted by their representatives and various head persons in the governance of their chiefdoms.
Most of the Pemba population is dependent on small-scale agriculture for its livelihood. The major economic activities that take place in the district in order of importance are farming and trading. These activities are mostly done on a small-scale level. ReadMore

Siavonga District is located in the Southern Province of Zambia and precisely stretches between latitudes 15.50° to 17.35° South and longitude 28.1° to 29.0° east. The District covers an area of about 3,413Km2. It is bordered by the Zambezi River in the North and East, Gwembe and Chikankata District in the West and Northwest, Chirundu District in the North and Lake Kariba in the South. In addition, the district shares an international boundary with Zimbabwe across Lake Kariba and along the Lower Zambezi River. Siavonga District has ten (12) wards namely; Kariba, Simamba, Nanyanga, Namuzunga, Nabutezi, Manchamva Inland, Manchamvwa Lakeshore, Munyama, Mutuba, Mulimya, Lusangazi, and Sinadambwe. ReadMore

Sinazongwe Town Council has been a District since 1990, which branched off from Gwembe District. From that time the District has made stride to improve the lives of its community through the provision of services and working together with all stakeholders within the District. ReadMore

Zimba is one of the thirteen (13) districts of Southern Province. The district is located southeast of Lusaka about 410 Kilometer along the (T1) Great – North road.  It shares boundary with Kalomo to the south north, Kazungula to the southwest, Choma and Sinazongwe to the east. Zimba district shares an international border with Zimbabwe through the mighty Zambezi River. It lies between Latitudes 16 and 17 South and Longitudes 26 and 27 East and covers a total area of 5,245 square kilometers in size. ReadMore
